Osteoporosis experts say the best way to prevent future bone breaks among older patients is good follow-up care.
A task force convened by the American Society For Bone and Mineral Research says "fracture liaison services" are key after patients have suffered their first osteoporosis-related fracture -- which increases the risk for a second break.
Such services include educating the patient, making sure the patient continues to get bone testing and take medications to prevent future breaks.
Secondary fractures are often caused by undiagnosed or untreated osteoporosis, according to the press release.
