Residents near Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue should not be alarmed to see smoke, hear loud noises or witness emergency personnel and helicopters responding on Saturday. It's only the annual Major Accident Response Exercise scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to test readiness and procedures.
Local authorities have been notified and the event generally activates the Omaha Metropolitan Medical Response System.
Every year, Offutt holds a MARE prior to the Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show to practice the wing's and local community's disaster response procedures.
