Lincoln has dropped its request for voluntary cutbacks on water use in the capital city and imposed mandatory restrictions.

A news release from the office of Mayor Chris Beutler said Thursday that the decision follows a review of computer modeling done on the impact of low water in the Platte River. Well fields under the river are the city's primary source for water.

The restrictions including reducing lawn watering to three days a week and a ban on the washing of sidewalks, driveways and other paved areas.

The drought and the demand for water during the growing season have forced several Nebraska communities to restrict usage.
