Some state lawmakers are criticizing Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz for how he removed ineligible citizens from the state’s voter registration list. Schultz bypassed input from the Legislature and the public.
Two Democrats and one Republican on the Legislature's administrative rules review committee questioned why Schultz enacted the rules on an emergency basis without public notice or input. But they said their committee would be powerless to stop them.
The rules were issued July 20th and went virtually unnoticed until Wednesday when civil rights groups filed a lawsuit seeking to block them. They lay out a process for Schultz's office to compare Iowa's registered voters against government lists of foreign nationals and remove those who should be ineligible.
Democratic Sen. Jack Kibbie called the rules "a last-ditch effort to control voting."
