The Federal Emergency Management Agency has reversed course on earlier decisions dealing with Lake Delhi, which was nearly drained after a dam failed in 2010.

State officials on Thursday say FEMA approved the state's appeal of its decision denying federal money to help rebuild the dam. Pat Hall of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management says Iowa is now eligible to apply for funding.

Lake Delhi supporters have $16 million in state and local funds to help rebuild the dam and restore the lake. Total costs have been estimated at $24 million.

FEMA also reversed decisions on Iowa returning money for dredging Lake Delhi and work at the Lakewood area near Des Moines after the flooding in 2008.

FEMA initially said the lakes' associations weren't eligible for public assistance.
