Plans Approved For Affordable Housing For Veterans

Thousands of dollars are needed to help provide at risk and homeless veterans with affordable housing. On Tuesday, the Omaha City Council voted unanimously to approve the plans for the project.

Thousands of dollars are needed to help provide at risk and homeless veterans with affordable housing. On Tuesday, the Omaha City Council voted unanimously to approve the plans for the project.

The plan is to renovate a building located at 819 Dorcas Street; it has been vacant for 10 years. There will be office space on the first floor and 80 apartments on the top floors.

The project will cost more than $17 million dollars. City Clerk Buster Brown says the project hinges on TIF funding, which stands for Tax Increment Financing. Victory Apartments LLC is applying for the funding to help rehabilitate the building. The TIF committee has recommended up to $715,000.

Gina Ostler lives across the street. She and others think this is a great idea.

"These people that have given so much or their lives," said Ostler. "They have their own families and they sacrifice a lot. So, if there are things that we can do than we should be doing it."

There is still one more step, a development agreement. After that, the TIF funding could be available for the renovation plans.
