Two people were killed and four injured in a two-vehicle rollover crash on I-29 near Crescent, Iowa Sunday morning.

Two Dead, Four Injured In I-29 Rollover

Iowa State Patrol says they believe alcohol played a factor in the fatal crash on I-29 near Crescent Sunday morning.

Two people were killed were injured.

The Iowa State Patrol said an SUV driven by Joel Garcia-Lucero was headed north in the right lane around 9 a.m. He switched lanes to pass a car driven by 49-year-old Richard Miller and lost control. The SUV crossed back into the right lane and hit the car. Both vehicles went into a ditch on the east side of the highway and rolled over.

Officials found beer cans at the scene.

Two people were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as 18-year-old Alvaro Rodriguez of Omaha and 37-year-old Obed Orozco of Logan, Iowa. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Garcia-Lucero of Omaha, 25-year-old Mario Amaya-Elizalde of Omaha and 27-year-old Alejandro Gardea of Omaha were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Twenty-five-year-old Nicholas Miller of Glenwood, Iowa was taken to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.

Garcia-Lucero, whose age was not available, was the only one of the injured not wearing a sea belt. As of Monday, three people are in fair condition at the hospital.

"It flipped over and it, the black car, and all we saw was a whole bunch of dust in the air," said witness Flor Flores. "It was terrible, we thought we were going to go and hit them, too. It was a really scary moment."

The northbound lanes were briefly closed so a medical helicopter could land. One lane was closed for several hours.

Officials say they'll have the toxicology reports back in 30 days from the driver of the SUV, Joel Garcia-Lucero.
