Voter turnout south of the Metro.
Voter turnout in Cass County matched that of the state in the Primary Election . The Cassgram reports 26% of those eligible to vote locally did so. All total, 4,346 ballots were counted in Cass County. There were 16,653 eligible voters.
There were 824 early voters.
With the U.S. Senate nomination and two Cass County Commissioner nominations to decide, registered Republican voters had higher interest races and Republican voters outnumbered Democrats by over a 2-to-1 margin (2,809 to 1,216).
In the U.S. Senate Republican race, Cass County voters gave Deb Fischer 38% of the vote and Jon Bruning just under 37%.
County lines appeared to be a factor in the Nebraska Legislature District 2 non-partisan race. The votes from outside Cass County (parts of Otoe and Sarpy Counties) decided second place and the final spot on the General Election ballot. Within Cass County, Ron Nolte, the District 5 Cass County Commissioner, finished second to State Senator R. Paul Lambert (the district-wide top vote-getter). Lambert: 1,375 votes within Cass County, Nolte: 884. (Mel Luetchens was third in the county with 778 votes.) Outside of Cass County though, Bill Kintner received 947 votes (857 of those from Sarpy County) to Nolte’s 175 to advance to November. Kintner, with a rural Papillion address, took 62% of the 1,383 votes cast in Sarpy County in the six-person District 2 race. (see Wednesday Cassgram)
