The city of Lincoln has moved one step closer to approving an ordinance that would ban tent demonstrations on public property.

The City Council held a second hearing Monday on a proposal that would prohibit a tent city like the one that Occupy Lincoln set up for more than six months. It was disbanded a few weeks ago at the city's request.

City Attorney Rod Confer says the ordinance allows the city to maintain standards of appearance for its public areas.

Some members of Occupy Lincoln argued against the ordinance saying they occupy public areas as a symbol for citizens who oppose a host of environmental and economic issues.

A vote on the ordinance is expected at the third hearing.
