Obama hasn't shut the gulf down. Although that oil does now go to Russia as of the first of this year. The U.S. produces 80% of it's own oil which hasn't lowered gas prices. Oil is now the #1 export from the U.S. Maybe if TransCanada hadn't dropped the ball concerning cleanup of past spills they wouldn't have such a fight on their hands now.

Choo choo! Buffett and Obama won't let this happen. After all Buffett's railroad won't be needed if the pipeline's built. Disgusting!

It's not strange at all Roger. Most refineries are built to crack and refine the light sweet crude which contains less than 0.05 percent sulphur. This type of oil comes Saudi Arabia, Louisiana Gulf (before Obama shut the Gulf down), Mexico and from other parts of the USA.    A very few were built to refine the heavy crude such as that from Venezuela and from sand tar. These refineries are located in S.Texas. In order for a new refinery to be built, an investor first needs to allocate at least $10 million to wade through the 6 foot high stack of forms and regulations not to mention the pest law suits from environmentalist and then there is no guarantee the permits would be issued. What is strange is all the government roadblocks for energy production. Just look at all the trouble to build a simple pipeline.

It seems strange to me that the oil can't be refined somewhere in the Dakotas. We have to pump the oil all the way to Texas to be refined and then a lot of the finished product will have to be shipped back to states North of Texas to be consumed. I am all for the pipeline if it shores up our petroleum supply, I just question why it has to be done in such an inefficient manner.

All of the local news stories I've seen on this item say nothing about the aquifer. They all basically say "the new route avoids the sand hills, so problem solved!" It's the aquifer that needs to be avoided. I'm just amazed beyond belief that TransCanada, with all their billions, simply won't do the right thing on their own. Greed rules!

The entire country wants this to happen, but one ignorant President with a political agenda doesn't? Obama is soon the realize what all of his ignorance has cost him which is any chance of re-election. Unless of course he fools the ignorant again this time around.

If you actually believe that then you must be one of two things, your either related to that fool Obama or you simply have no clue.

I can't find a map of the new plan. But did you know that there already is a pipeline from Canada that runs N->S thru easter ND/SD/Neb? Why did they want to run the new pipeline NW->SE across the region instead of running it along side the existing one? I would think they already have the right-of-way, and it would be easier to maintain both pipeline, no?

You people do of course realize that without the pipeline TransCanada has no choice but to sell the oil in Canada or the U.S. The only reason for the pipeline is so it can go to the highest bidder which will usually be overseas. TransCanada cannot run a pipeline to the WestCoast because Canadians are well aware of TransCanada's bad track record concerning spill cleanup and the environment and even more importantly the Rocky Mountains are in the way.

was not only your boy in the white house our own Govenor and senators helped block over the aquifer so don't place all that credit on obama. Some people have a one track mind when patting demos on the back.

Maybe they thought the farmers are doing more damage then would if there was a spill.

I agree, I'm not a big Obama fan but if there had to be a Democrat in office , He was the one. On this particial situation. Worked out great for Nebraska. We get to protect our resourses. Gas pricecs, This pipeline will have zero bering on them at all. Ask yourself this why didn't Transcanada become more sensitive to the path before ? HMM $ Maybe..

Obama only blocked the plan due to its path over the aquifer. This is a good example of compromise which we need to see more of in congress.

The plan looks good. Build it! You can bring it through my back yard if you like.
