A toddler was taken to the hospital via medical helicopter Friday after falling out of a second-story window.

Toddler Falls From Second-Story Window

A toddler was taken to the hospital via medical helicopter Friday after falling out of a second-story window.

Investigators said the 2-year-old girl was playing with her older brother at their home near 144th and State Street. It appears Kinley Moore leaned against the screen and it gave way, causing her to fall from the window onto the driveway below.

Moore was alert and crying when the helicopter left for the Nebraska Medical Center where she is in fair condition.

Neighbors say it was an accident that could have happened to anyone.

Richard Hightower and 2-year-old Avery are used to seeing a lot from this front window. It's protected by a screen with a warning written on it. “Screen will not stop children from falling out window,” said Hightower. But he says it’s not very strong.

“It moves, I mean a couple centimeters already just by pushing it. It wouldn't take very much to push it off,” said Hightower.

It didn't take much for the screen to break next door. Friday morning Moore fell through the window after the screen broke.

“I was doing some gardening across the street,” said Bridget Williams, who heard crying. “I look over and the baby was crying and she was on the ground on her back and the screen was pushed back so she had obviously fallen out the window." The window is 11-feet, 8-inches high.

“As soon as I saw her I ran over and picked her up. I told the little boy to go get his mom,” said Williams. “I know with these screens how flimsy they can be. If I open the basement window my cat can push it out."

As neighbors wait to hear from family, they say this accident is a reminder to everyone. “They can be really flimsy so it's just kind of a reminder the keep your windows closed if your kids are going to play up there. It's just a really scary accident,” said Williams.
