This rot probably does go deeper than just Lawry.

Yeah, like oil companies don't watch their money at all, haha.

Yes, this was serial, habitual pilferage of public funds.

Lawry is a registered Republican. Mike Foley, the state auditor who uncovered the misuse, is also a Republican. Which party's "partisan politics" are you talking about here?

Saw here on the news in her jail attire at least she's wearing the colors for Gretna green and white :)

The "Gretna, NE auditiors report" is easy enough to find on line. Interesting read....it doesn't appear she "mistakeningly" used the card a time or two but rather countless times and then paid the city back a personal check. This is a cash advance any way you look at it, she should have to pay cash advance fees too. Shame on the mayor and administor for letting this happen.

I wonder how many of our city council/administrators have been doing the same thing and have gotten away with it.

Big deal about Rita Crundwell. That happened in Dixon, Illinois, Kay, and this incident we are discussing is taking place here in Gretna, Nebraska. That's all that's relevant or matters at present. What Colleen Lawry did was just as criminal and awful. She stole from a senior citizen fund, also stole from the taxpayers, and did it all for her own personal use/gain. She took great advantage of her position with the city of Gretna.

This is nothing more than partisan politics. Anyone could easily used the wrong card by mistake. You people want more oversight? More government??? Just like St. Reagan said, "Government can't solve your problems, government IS the problem."

Sounds to me that instead of being a 'giving' person she was more of a 'taking' person. You should be asshamed at defending that theif. No one is saying this lady needs to be 'burned at the stake', tax payers are just SICK and TIRED of these well-to-do community heads and politicians throwing money away on personal things. I hope that the judge throws the book at this lady....

I have just one thing to say. "Let he or she who is without sin cast the first stone." I am not a betting person, but I would bet my last dollar that very few stones would be cast................yes, apparently she messed up. But there's a WHOLE LOT MORE "things" going on out there that need to be dealt with.

Now she is spending more of the tax payers money in jail. smh

I read thru the auditor's report and as Fed gov't employee, you are given per diem each day for food and hotel--I can't imagine having an open bank account for meals and lodging...of course I'd buy $6 bottled water at the airport and $30 lunch and $50 dinner! And to not have receipts....any meaningful receipts...it is beyond comprehension that this is the "normal" business of how a city is run! She basically bought clothes for herself and labeled them as "uniforms"....and getting a Kindle Fire as a necessary expense AND $60-$70 worth of books! I was astounded at her salary...$90K....I don't think the mayor of CB makes that much and he has 10X the citizens! There is something seriously wrong there in Gretna and I think we're beginning to realize that at the local level this is the tip of the iceberg. Oh and yeah, trust me, at the Federal level....what the GSA did with their $800K conference...that's a drop in the bucket compared to what some in the DoD do.

She is being vilified for her spending excesses, but she has not been charged for them. She was charged for stealing from the elderly, something that a "nice and giving person" probably wouldn't do. I think the jury of her peers will give her a fair trial (if she doesn't settle in a plea bargain.)

I guess it is a good thing Ms. Lawry wasn't in a state job, except that her misdeeds probably would have caught up with her a bit earlier. Both examples are of why periodic external audits are essential to ensuring taxpayer money isn't wantonly spent on thing other than official necessities.
