With a gun at your head ????? You'd lose !!!!!

In 1999, we opted for spring break in Mazatlan, Mexico. Several of us were extorted by mexican police to either give them money, or go to jail for whatever charges they wanted to make up against you. One night, while escorting a young lady back to her hotel, I was approached by 3 locals attempting to hayve their way with this girl. Because i defended her, the assailants cornered me at knife point and if not for a larger group of locals coming to the rescue, i believe this girl would have been raped and killed and I would have met my demise on the sidewalk of a busy street in the resort area of Mazatlan. Never again.

I have vacationed four times in the Rivera Maya area which is south of Cancun and have always felt safe. We have travelled off the resort on the public bus service. The people of the area are gracious hosts. That being said, I would not travel at night or in crime ladden areas there or even here in Omaha. Use common sense people. There are thousands of people who travel to Cancun and the Rivera Maya every week and nothing happens to them.

Well Dad,and after reading your assumptions it alarms me that you may be a dad..But the big difference here,is when you in the US and your robbed of you ID..you are not in a situation where you would not be allowed to return home. That is the BIG difference. Whether something else happened or something is missing I am sure thatwill come out in due time. Oh and watch WGN sometime, there first 10-20 minutes is either about all the shootings there,or how the Cubs are already eliminated from playoff contention. Just because we don't report what happens in other N.A. cities does not mean it does not happen.

Not that I'm a big fan of Mexico (or Britain or Uganda for that sense), but certain Miami or St Louis areas are way too dangerous than Mexico. And there was another shooting in Omaha yesterday again...

I have been to Mexico many times, most recently Feb 2012 we were in Cancun. We walked the streets and used the busses. We went to many shopping areas in town. I never felt unsafe. I never just stay on my resort in Mexico. Would I walk anywhere alone at night no but I can't say I would walk in down town Omaha at night alone either. Every place has people who look to harm you no matter where you go. This could have happened on a trip to any where not just in Mexico. The only reason this is on the news is because it was in Mexico. This happens every day everywhere. Just be smart and be aware of your surroundings no matter where you go. You should have to avoid wonderful places like Mexico because of fear. Just be smart in what you do.

This story sounds fishy. I was in Cozumel 4 weeks ago and there were no problems for the entire week. I know that Cancun is probably not as safe as Cozumel but that being said it is not that bad there. It is much safer in southern mexico than it is in northern mexico. Funny though how we don't report these kinds of problems in our north american cities. This happens all the time. Just because it occurred in mexico doesn't make it less safe there. This is one story. The more I read it the more things don't line up. This is not the complete story, something is missing that makes this story different than it really is.

I fail to understand why someone wants to travel to a country when so many of it's own citizens want to leave it.

To be fair, Mexico is a gorgeous country along the costal areas and an absolute blast, best time have been there.
HOWEVER, you are in a place where you are little more than a target and you need to understand that. Nobody gives a damn if you are an American, Canadian, German, or whatever else. You are a potential target anywhere there and if you go out of the patroled areas and are is good as dead. BE AWARE.

college students go to spring break all the time and Cancun is a very popular spot. Just make sure you travel in groups and stay on the resort. Give the kid and mom a break. I've been to Cancun many times and felt very safe. Just be thankful that he is alive and learned a lesson from this horrible experience.

LOL agree. Should have just swam the river and went to the nearest boarder patrol and said he lost his ID.

You seem a little jaded. I suppose you also claim that women who are assaulted somehow are lying or it was tgheir own fault too? And obviously you don't know much about Cancun..they will rob tourists blind if given the chance. Especially Americans.
