You make a good point, and if someone were riding a bike on Dodge in traffic, I would expect them to follow the same rules as every other vehicle. But in fact, bicyclists rarely ride on Omaha's most congested roads. The reason bicycling can be faster is because bicycling allows one to gain more a more intimate knowledge of the street grid and find more efficient routes (that aren't congested), and bicyclists also have trails or dedicated bike lanes [sometimes] while most drivers are stuck in traffic on major arterials during peak commute times. My 6.5 mile (or 10.5km, since the reference comment used metric) ride takes me about 30 minutes to bike or about 15 minutes to drive, but I feel much better during the day when I bike to work, and I don't have to make separate time for exercise.

This is so awesome! Way to go Omaha!

What you fail to realize is that is hundreds of cars that won't be clogging the roadway or the parking spots of your hummer!

First off, the construction of a two-way protected bike lane with a tree filled median won't be cheap. From my understanding it will have a single route. Have you been in Nebraska long? The winters conditions will affect the bike lanes and it will need maintenance. None of these costs will be free or cheap. I see no reason to add addition costs to maintaining our roadways when the city is unable to keep up with the current roads we have now.

Good for you! So with all that money you saved, perhaps you should start a donation fund.

And the roads are still in terrible condition, and you'd prefer to build a bike lane, with tree filled median? If Cyclists want it, and it won't create more problems than solve, then they can pay for it. If it's such a great idea, all these cyclists should be lining up with their donations, right?

I agree with some of what you have said, however, I also see many cyclists who cut in and out of traffic and disregard stop signs and traffic lights when it's convenient.

So, as I vehicle owner, I should pay for the additional cost for this bike lane? and the yearly maintenance? Sorry, I'm just not for it. I honestly don't believe it would make the impact on cars on the road that you claim. Also, in the winter months, the number of cyclists drop considerably.

The concept is great, however the cost of the project and the maintenance, wouldn't be cost effective at all. I can't see spending the cash needed to support such a small amount of users in a city like ours. Sure, I've seen a couple riders in the winter, but rarely. There are more important things to spend our money on.

So if cyclists follow the rules of the road, wouldn't they also be held up in traffic? Making them no quicker to get to work in your 5-10km distance? It would seem that they are not if they get there faster...

I find it funny how a grown adult feels the need to put on spandex suits and helmets in order to ride a bike. If you need a helmet to ride a bike then you are either 12 years old or need to get a new mode of transportation...

Yes, and if you want to ride a bike join a gym and ride a bike all day if you wish. I for one do not want to be slowed down on a road by someone on a bike.

Who plows the dedicated bike lane, behind a tree lined median, from November to march? Will there be penalties if bikes leave the dedicated lanes?

The 'cyclist' who got clocked at 72nd & Dodge the other day might skew your healthy biking statistics a wee bit.
