Well said. Although I don't know how people will take your use of facts.

Actually, roads were paved due to lobbying efforts by the League of American Wheelmen (now the League of American Bicyclists). Dibs.

Bike lanes are good, but what we really need is more responsible adults on bikes , patroling the roads, and using video cameras to record license plate numbers.

I do have to agree with several of you this is just a way to make it look like the "Bicycle Directer" is worth the 65k a year he makes, even though that should be about a 1000 dollar job at most.

I'm not a bike enthusiast, but I think it's a good idea for that part of town. Seems like it would provide more of a community atmosphere.

Riding a bike on the street in Omaha has required the bike rider be ultra cautious and alert because most automobile drivers still place bikes in the catagory of a toy their child rides and should not to be allowed in traffic. The bike is a legal form of transportation which means it is allowed on the streets. It has been such longer than automobiles and now, because of gas prices, it is becoming a popular means of transportation. It is not a toy and we as bike commuters are not "playing in traffic". If automobile drivers were more aware of cyclists we wouldn't have to ask for bike lanes but more bike lanes will make biking to work and home a safer operation for all of us. It will also bring more novice cyclists into commuting because the improved safety. We are not asking for "special lanes for everything else" We are simply asking for lanes that can accommodate a separation of less swift, hard, unforgiving, damaging means of transport from automobiles and truck.

I would hope everyone would consider that this type of development is not just about the bicycle lane. While getting into downtown as fast as possible is the primary concnern for most, this development has the potential to change the urban fabric & create a pedestrian scale corridor where business will thrive. We might all benefit if we would slow down a little and actually enjoy what is going on around us. Omaha is a great city, especially at the pedestrian scale.

So you also think there should be no sidewalks?

Rather, the ONLY thing cars do well is connect people and places. Bikes however: strengthen muscles, strengthen your immune system, reduce mental stress, reduce heart and cardiovascular diseases, reduce costs to society regarding health care in general. They create a healthier, quieter, more calm, wealthier society. If you don't believe me take five minutes and do your own research.

I wonder how many of these people would want to register their kids' bikes? After all, their kids ride them in the streets too!
