You bet I would if he presented a threat to my children. I wouldn't think twice about it.
...and yes, I am big and tough. That's why he'd have a serious problem if he got near my kids. Too many horror stories of violence on children to not take any threat with the utmost seriousness.

I'm sorry, but the father was well within his rights to defend his children. As a father, my children's safety comes far before altruism for a developmentally challenged person (how would one know that in the moment, anyway?).
I would have wiped the floor with the guy and not felt bad about it later. You present a percieved risk to a man's child, you must expect him to react with devastating force to neutralize the threat. There are simply too many dangers to children nowdays to stop and feel sorry for a threat or even care why they are there or what their mental capacity is.
I'm afraid the liberals posting will soon talk themselves into thinking the father committed some kind of crime by punching the perp. That's usually how these things end up. Monday morning quarterbacking by the bleeding hearts.

Suspect is lucky. If my kids were screaming with a stranger in the car with them there would not be a punch in the face. He is lucky the father did not have a firearm. It could have ended badly for the suspect and everyone else.

I must apologize for my comment to "nobody's perfect". I was not aware of the update indicating the suspect was mentally challenged.

Well said. I think the point of the story was actually to report that Dad took matters into his own hands and won. Good for him! Let's show these punk thugs that we don't have to take it!

There is no question in my mind that the father did the right thing by getting physical with someone that was a threat to his children. Whether Dalton is mentally disabled or not has absolutely nothing to do with it. The father punched him in the face to remove the threat to his children, and I think showed an enormous amount of restraint in not taking it further.

Another VERY important lesson to be learned here is that it is NEVER safe to leave children alone in a vehicle, not even for a minute. This is one of 4 cases this week, only in the other 3 cases the vehicle was stolen with the child inside. There is a website, www.KidsAndCars.org, that works to raise awareness about the many dangers children face in and around vehicles. They have a lot of great safety information. Many parents truly believe their child is safe if left alone in a vehicle for a minute or two, but they couldn't be further from the truth. So very glad these little ones are okay.

I can't believe you'd even end your comment that way. You can't do a genetic test to tell if someone will be a cold blooded murderer, but if their ultrasound looks good, you let them live. Any baby, from conception, no matter what genetic tests tell you, has the right to life. ANY.ONE. A genetic test can't tell you what their disposition in life will be. You don't abort a child because they might rob a store...you don't abort a child because they have a mental handicap. You weren't aborted because you have a bad attitude.

Your comment sums the whole thing up.

Intent of the criminal aside, why wouldn't the father react?

You're whistling dixie if you think the people who post here have any compassion or empathy for anyone. According to them, kids are adults, mentally impaired people should be in an institution, and all black people are criminals. I'm betting this comment doesn't get posted but I feel better for having made it.

You would wipe the pavement with someone who functions on the level of a child? Big tough man!!!!

My parents had the problem of a developmentally challenged son. Those of you who don't have to deal with this have no idea of the pain involved, so stop with your sanctimonious comments. There isn't any place for these human beings in society because of attitudes like yours. My brother lived in a nursing home until his death at the age of 75. It is a true tragedy in the waste of human fulfillment. So, to those who advocate brutality to a person who can't understand, I hope you never have any unsolvable events in life, not for your comfort but for the soul who has the problem.

Never get between a papa bear and his cubs. He's lucky he's not dead.

I am going on the record to get flamed big time but abortion has been legal since what, 1973? And amniocentisis tests that can tell you if you are going to have a Down's Syndrome child have been around about as long? In 2012, we should not be having this discussion unless the person attacking the children was at least in his late 30's. As far as "North O Gal" goes, if this person was in a locked facility as he should have been, these children should not have been subjected to this trauma. And if this person had been detained before for theft, he DEFINITELY should be in a locked ward some place. Sorry, but I have zero compassion for people who were placed on this earth when it could have been discovered they had no chance at a normal life in utero.
