The Douglas County Attorney decided Friday to charge a 16-year-old shooting suspect as an adult.

Christopher Young was arrested Thursday for second-degree assault in connection to the shooting at North 41st and Izard streets.

County Attorney Don Kleine told Channel 6 News the victim, 20-year-old Kevin Hulscher, suffered only minor injuries. He was released from the hospital Thursday and arrested on outstanding warrants.

Young told police he was defending himself from people who were threatening him in the alley behind his grandparents' home and in the yard.

Hulscher said he was just taking a shortcut from a convenience store when he saw Young with a shotgun. The few feet he was able to put between him and the barrel of the shotgun probably saved his life. Hulscher was wounded in the head, back and leg.

Young’s grandfather, General Lee Young Jr., got to see Chris for the first time since his arrest. “It seems like he is doing okay.”

According to court documents, Young told officers he was acting in self-defense, claiming there were six or seven people in the alley moments before he went inside and brought out the shotgun and they had been coming into the yard and threatening the 16-year-old. When Young came back with the gun he encountered Hulscher. Brief, angry words were exchanged and Young raised the shotgun.

Witnesses told police where they could find the shooter and moments later Young was put in the back of a cruiser. His grandfather said their next move is limited. “We can't afford an attorney so we're going to have a public defender and go from there."

Young's next court appearance will be May 8th for a preliminary hearing. The charge filed against him is second-degree assault. If convicted, Young would serve between one and 20 years in prison.

A Logan, Iowa man was shot in the back in Omaha Thursday afternoon. A suspect is in custody.

Twenty-year-old Kevin Hulscher was wounded at North 41st and Izard streets around 3:30 p.m. He was treated at the hospital and released, then booked for a misdemeanor warrant.

The gunfire resulted from a fight between Hulscher and several people in an alley. The suspect was seen running into a nearby apartment building where he was later taken into custody. Police say he is a 16-year-old boy.

Charges are pending.
