Weekend Traffic Stops Net Nearly 60 Pounds of Pot

Two weekend traffic stops led Nebraska State Patrol troopers to seize 58.5 lbs of marijuana, according to a release from the agency.

Two weekend traffic stops led Nebraska State Patrol troopers to seize 58.5 lbs of marijuana, according to a release from the agency.

The first stop came in just before 11:30 Friday night, when a trooper stopped a speeding car on eastbound Interstate-80 in Lincoln County. According to the NSP, the trooper smelled marijuana coming from the car while speaking with the driver of the 2012 Mazda. A probable cause search led to the seizure of 25.5 lbs of marijuana. The marijuana, contained in 15 packages, was wrapped in Christmas paper in the trunk of the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Robert L. McLeod of Sunrise, Fla., and a passenger, 28-year-old Benjamin T. Whitted of Lauderhill, Fla., were both lodged in the Lincoln County Jail, each on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

The second stop happened around 5:15 Saturday evening near the Lincoln Airport Exit in Lancaster County. There, a trooper stopped a 2012 Chevy Impala for speeding. The release said an NSP canine detected marijuana in the car and that led officers to the rear. Troopers searched the vehicle which led to the seizure of 33 lbs. of marijuana. The marijuana was contained in two duffel bags in the trunk of the car.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, 23-year-old Hui Yuan Chen from Oakland, Calif., was lodged in the Lancaster County Corrections on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
