Block Party Unites Neighborhoods
A community block party strengthens the bond between people and the people who protect them.
Hundreds came Saturday to the annual block party put on by Hanscom Park United Methodist Church at 45th and Frances. Residents from 42nd-72nd streets and Leavenworth-Grover streets were invited. The event was free and had free will donations of money or canned goods for Together Inc.
“It's really cool to see the people come up and enjoy themselves and they're so thankful they come up to us and tell us what a great deal it is," said Maurice Mashek with Hanscom Park United Methodist Church.
Police officers and firefighters who serve the neighborhoods attended and got to speak with residents about their concerns in the area. OPD Officer Todd Coniglio said he likes to meet with parents and kids when it's not an emergency situation, adding that police need the community on their side.
"I think some of the more recent problems we've had is theft from motor vehicles and we have had some burglaries in this area. Just keep your eye out, look around, if you see suspicious parties don't hesitate to call 911,” Officer Coniglio explained.
