Diversion programs have been established for a number of groups in Nebraska; there are diversion programs for people who've committed nonviolent drug offenses, diversion programs for troubled youths and ones for low-level traffic offenders.

Now, Lancaster County officials have added a diversion plan for
a new demographic: military veterans.

Four Vietnam War veterans have already signed up with the Lancaster
County Veterans Pretrial Diversion, which started Monday.

County Attorney Joe Kelly says the goal of the program is to
hold offenders accountable while reducing recidivism and keeping
veterans out of jails and courtrooms.

Under the program, the federal Veterans Affairs Department will
work with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or
traumatic brain injury who end up in the courts.
