Gov Approved Job Reference Change

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has approved a bill that would allow companies to offer job references for current and former employees without fear of a lawsuit.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has approved a bill that would allow companies to offer job references for current and former employees without fear of a lawsuit.

The measure by Fremont Sen. Charlie Janssen would allow companies to share specific worker information with prospective employers, if the employee gives written consent.

Companies could disclose information about an employee's job performance, attendance, pay and wage history, and the results of drug and alcohol tests. They also could disclose any history of threats or harassment, and whether an employee is eligible to be rehired.

The new law will not apply to employers that knowingly give false information or recklessly disregard the truth.
