Homeowners in Northwest Omaha were in for a rude surprise Thursday morning. Vandals had painted graffiti on houses and signs. Residents say they are upset and want whoever did it to pay for their actions.
Usually graffiti is difficult to decode, but the messages on houses near 152nd & Dodge are easily understood.
"I don't think it was done by anybody in this neighborhood," says neighbor John Wendl. "It looked like maybe it was related to some high school revenge thing. I noticed there was something with a derogatory statement about Burke on one of the houses."
Wendl has lived in the neighborhood for years. He says it's normally quiet. That's why neighbors were surprised to wake up to graffiti with some racist messages, others directed at Burke High School.
Resident Jonna Puckett says she was upset because so many kids walk in the neighborhood. "They have to come from school today reading all that nice profane language that is on everyone's houses."
Puckett's house was hit. Her concern is getting it taken care of as soon as possible.
"I called police this morning, but I haven't heard back from anybody yet," says Puckett. "Hopefully they will do something about it. I don't know what they can do."
Police tell Channel Six it's difficult to catch vandals in the act. Homeowners say Omaha Police told them to call the graffiti hotline at (402) 444-5555.
With new laws in place, homeowners are encouraged to remove it right away. They can do it themselves, or request the graffiti removal van.
