Murder Suspects Appear In Court

Two men accused of murdering 17-year-old Devina Johnson last August, appeared before a judge for the first time Wednesday morning.

Murder Suspects Appear In Court

Two men accused of murdering 17-year-old Devina Johnson last August, appeared before a judge for the first time Wednesday morning.

The suspects, 18-year-old Tracey Wooten, and 21-year-old Tristian Rodriguez-Shelly are both held without bond, charged with First Degree Murder, and other weapons charges.

Prosecutors say the men were identified by witnesses after the August 27, 2011 shooting at 36th Avenue and Ames. Witnesses say the two were running from the scene, with guns. Shots were fired into a vehicle, where Johnson was sitting. She died of her injuries.

Investigators searched the homes of Wooten and Shelly. Inside Shelly's home, they found a gun which matched the gun used in the shooting. Shelly's DNA was found on the gun, which had been stolen from a different state.

Judge Jeffrey Marcuzzo set a preliminary hearing for both suspects.

Supporters of Shelly, left the courtroom, saying he is innocent.

Johnson's mother also spoke, saying this is the first step towards justice for her daughter's death. She says the shooting was a case of mistaken identity, and her daughter was not involved with the men in any way.
