Man Of Steel Coming To Omaha

George Clooney came to Omaha and made a movie here. How about Superman? The superhero will be making an appearance here soon in a comic book.

Faster than a speeding bullet, he's the most recognizable comic book character there is. Even though he's now about 78 years old, he still holds timeless values that comic book collectors like Jason Miner look up to.

“Even in a more cynical era, that truth, justice and the American way are still things that people can aspire to. Those are timeless values, really."

Some say Superman has lost touch with reality lately, at least until now. "Next month is when he'll start on his walk-about and he'll be traveling across the country."

Starting with issue 701, he'll go from city to city to places like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Omaha, something unusual for this superhero to do.

“His story takes place in Metropolis, which isn't a real city. Marvel's characters like Spider-Man are in the real world, New York for example,” says Miner. “So for Superman to be venturing out into real cities, Omaha or any of the other ones across the country, pretty cool to provide that touchstone that hasn't always been part of the Superman story.”

As the story goes, Superman was adopted as an infant by a Kansas couple before moving to Metropolis as a adult. Miner is excited to see his return to the Midwest and thinks other fans will be, too.

“Just like you have sports teams, that you have some local pride there. Certainly I think if you've got a city that's being represented here, there should be some extra excitement tied into that idea.”

Superman will be walking across the U.S. for 12 months, which means he won't get to Omaha for a while. Once he gets here, manager Craig Patterson expects business to increase at Dragon's Lair Comics, 153rd and Q streets. With the local tie, Superman will have completed his mission to get more readers.

“It's a chance for them to get Superman to reconnect with people,” said Patterson. “I mean story-wise, and just if any people have wandered off and don't feel that Superman's relevant anymore, it's a way to kind of make him a little more so.”

So watch out Omaha, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman! Superman is coming to town.

If you're not from Omaha, but want your town featured, there is an essay contest where you can write about your town if it's within a 50-mile radius of Omaha. The winning town will be featured in an upcoming issue as well.

More information and contest rules can be found on DC Comic's Web site.
