Hundreds of members of a metro fitness club are feeling sore after the club closed its doors after only a day's notice. New Lady Fitness at 76th and Cass has gone out of business.

Some of the 700 members tell Six on Your Side they had been encouraged by club management to sign new contracts just weeks or days ago with no hint the gym would shut down.

"I just signed a $400 training contract, and I'm out of luck on that," one member said.

A club manager says the Indianapolis-based owner notified her just two days ago the club would close. Twenty-five employees, including instructors and daycare workers, now have to find new jobs.

"We found out yesterday that today we're out of a job," said Jaime Thurber. "There's nothing for us."

Charlie Becktile, the man sent by New Lady Fitness to close the gym, did not have an explanation, only an apology.

"Although I don't have anything to do with the closing, I'd apologize to them personally for the inconvenience it's going to cause. It's just a business that didn't work. I don't have details," Becktile said.

Members of the gym were given the opportunity to transfer their memberships to Better Bodies at 120th and "I" Streets, but many members say that doesn't quite cut it.

"They're offering us a place to go, but it doesn't have a pool and there are several women that go by bus and can't get out to 120th," member Phyllis Rist said.

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning will investigate member complaints.

Meanwhile, Better Bodies owner Todd Mills says he has assumed all the memberships and is awaiting delivery of the contracts.

Even though Better Bodies is co-ed and does not have a pool, Mills says this was the best fit for members of the now-closed New Lady Fitness.

He hopes they will give his club a chance.
