The Mavericks let a two-goal lead slip away in the third period Saturday night allowing the Ohio State Buckeyes to skate off with a 3-2 win and a sweep of the weekend series in Columbus.
Eric Olimb capped off a three-point weekend poking in a loose puck past OSU’s Dustin Carlson at the 2:08 mark of the second to give UNO a 1-0 lead. Tomas Klempa’s power-play goal at 11:24 made it 2-0 and extended his point streak to 11 games.
For the second night in a row UNO took a lead late into the third period, but thanks to some outstanding goaltending by OSU’s Carlson the Buckeyes were able to creep back into the game.
Hunter Bishop cut the Maverick lead to 2-1 on a slap shot from the high slot that beat UNO goalie Jerad Kaufmann at 4:02 of the final period. OSU then tied the game at 13:33 on a John Albert score and took the lead five minutes later on Albert’s second goal of the night at 18:33.
The Mavericks outshot the Buckeyes 46-23, including a 40-16 advantage in the final two periods. The loss drops the Mavs to 9-4-1 overall and 5-4-1-1 in conference action.
