How to make exercise not suck
Can I say “suck” on my blog? I can’t think of a more applicable description for exercise.

Have you ever vowed to start an exercise routine and then quit weeks (or days!) later?
Have you ever listened to people talk about “working out” and wondered why that just doesn’t appeal to you?
Have you ever wondered why people going to the gym strategize and circle the lot endlessly to find the closest parking spot? (Sorry – that’s not really applicable to my blog, but I have always thought that to be a little ironic!)
The voice of Alegent’s Exercise Physiologist, Maggie Sweigart, keeps echoing in my head . . . “whatever you choose for exercise, make sure it’s something you enjoy.”
“Make exercise something you enjoy.” Hmm . . . that’s an interesting approach.
You mean I don’t have to put on my leg warmers and a terry cloth headband and sweat neither to the oldies nor to Jane Fonda? (Yikes, I’m telling my age, aren’t I?!?)
So what is fun to me? Walking, playing volleyball, Yoga, working at our cabin, doing yard work. But do those really count? After all, I don’t “feel the burn” or “get in a zone” or reach my “Anaerobic Threshold”. (Ok . . . I cheated on that last term – can you believe there is a website of just fitness terms?!?) ;-)
The answer is yes; they count!
Activity is activity and while I should add a little resistance training to round out my exercise, our lesson this week indicated the recommendation for that is simply twice a week! I can’t believe how focusing on just a few fun activities has made such a difference already. Check out the video I’ll post; I could only do one push up when the program started July 20 but with consistency (because I ENJOY the activities I’m doing) I am doing many more and getting stronger each day!
