My fabulous friend Emily got married to a great guy named Matt. She was a beautiful bride and the wedding was perfect. It was one of the rare times that all seven of my closest high school friends, along with their husbands and soon to be husbands, were all together, and I haven't had that much fun in a long time. I am so blessed to have these women in my life!
But how does a trip to the windy city fit into my new attitude towards healthy living? Is it even possible to think about exercise and healthy eating while on vacation? Two weeks ago my answer would have been no! So how did I do?
The good news first. I was a little worried about how I would get in all my exercise this weekend. HA! I walked at least 10 miles in the past two days. We arrived in Chi-town early Friday morning, and since the wedding wasn't until 3:00, we had time to walk around the city. The last time I was there I got engaged, so it was fun to walk around again and remember that trip! I think we walked around for about 3 hours!
After the wedding we walked over a mile to the reception (and I did the walk in heels-my feet are seriously mad at me right now!). On Saturday we walked from a friend's place to Wrigley field, which was also over a mile. I am proud of myself for suggesting a lot of these walks instead of taking cabs!
I also spent at least 3 hours on the dance floor-seriously! I have an addiction to dancing at wedding receptions-it is one of my favorite things in life. And when I get with my high school friends-we dance! Hard core dance! Our husbands don't even bother to try and stop us!
The bad news? Well, actually, it's not that bad. I'm talking about the food!.I could lie and say that while my friends were enjoying Chicago dogs and deep dish pizza and Emily's ridiculously delicious dessert bar, I was eating rice cakes and salad with no dressing, but I promised to keep it real on this blog so I will tell the truth. I did eat some pretty good food. Not necessarily good for you food, but really really good tasting food. But I do not feel like I went overboard at all. Friday morning we had breakfast at a little corner bakery, and while I did order eggs, I only ate half of them. I had a few appetizers at the wedding, and luckily the dinner was fairly healthy-stuffed chicken breast and asparagus-and okay okay there were some amazing potatoes that I ate! And at the dessert bar, even though the cheesecake lollipops were, as a friend said "life changing", I only had one!! (I blame Emily. I really feel that, if she was truly a friend, she would have ditched the dessert bar and had only veggies!)
Saturday we had rooftop tickets to a Cubs game. Our tickets included all you can eat and drink. I am proud to say that I did not eat or drink all that I could have, but I did have a Chicago style hotdog and some drinks-but I skipped the chips! (Okay, maybe that doesn't make up for all the eating and drinking, but it's something right? RIGHT?!?!)
Saturday night we waited 3 hours for some deep dish pizza and I had a slice. But only one! That's will power people!
So while I didn't eat the healthiest, I was very conscious of what I was eating and I did try to limit myself a little bit. A week ago I wouldn't have given any thought to what I was eating, and so I am proud that I did try to keep it all in check.
A super shout out to all my girls and the husbands. We sure aren't 21 anymore, but it was so much fun pretending. Thanks for all of your support-you guys mean the world to me! Looking forward to the next wedding!!
