Metabolic Syndrome
"It's the greatest secret kept," says Methodist Hospital nutritionist Marilyn Wadum. It is called metabolic syndrome and nearly 50 million Americans are affected by it. Most don't even know they have it! Reporter: Pat PersaudEmail Address: pat.persaud@wowt.com |

Health by the Numbers
So, what exactly is metabolic syndrome? It's a medical term for a cluster of measurements:
- Elevated Blood Pressure
- High triglycerides
- Insulin resistance
- Abdominal Obesity (a waist circumference of 32" for women)
Nutritionist Marilyn Wadum says, "These numbers can predict all major diseases for women, diseases such as cardiac disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes."
We can manage this ourselves though by becoming more active, eating sensibly and keeping our weight down. It's something for all women to discuss with our doctors. Our metabolism changes as we age, but many of us just accept it and do nothing about it.
Wadum says every woman should know their health "measurements" before the age of 45. Again, the numbers can predict all major diseases that can develop in our lifetime. Why not do something about it now.
