The Huskers continued preparations for the Idaho Vandals with a two-hour workout Wednesday afternoon.

The Nebraska ground game racked up 289 rushing yards and six touchdowns in the 49-10 win over Western Kentucky last Saturday.

Offensive line coach Barney Cotton was among the NU staff members to address the media, speaking about the progress of the front line that features a pair of new starters in junior center Mike Caputo and freshman left tackle Jeremiah Sirles.

“We should be well past the getting to know each other part. The other thing is we’re flopping guys around. (Jeremiah) Sirles, as a redshirt freshman, played left tackle and right tackle, which is asking a lot out of a young guy, but he’s good enough to do that. I don’t think chemistry is any question right now. When you’ve got 40 to 50 practices (with spring practices and fall camp) under your belt there are no rookies playing next to each other.”

Seven different Huskers tallied at least one reception in the season-opening victory. Led by six catches from junior Brandon Kinnie, the Huskers helped the NU quarterbacks total 247 yards through the air.

Receivers coach Ted Gilmore spoke about needed improvement in the upcoming games. “Across the board, if there was a disappointment in my position this past week, we came up short on the depth of routes quite a bit. In that ball game it didn’t hurt us, we got away with it. But as these ball games get closer, that’s going to be huge, especially when you’re trying to keep the chains going and keep the ball moving.”

Nebraska will have one more full workout Thursday afternoon. A Friday walk-through will precede Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. game.
