An engineer says a mall parking garage is safe. But the looks of it has many visitors looking up.
A crack has developed along a steel expansion joint on the west side, top level of the Center Mall parking garage constructed in the 1950’s.
Heather Ryberg is one of many parents who use a family assistance office on the second floor of Center Mall at 42nd and center in Omaha.
The entrance is near the cracked garage ceiling. Heather says, “I hope it’s well supported, but in my opinion I don’t think it looks too safe.”
The mall owner has hired a structural engineer. Kip Squire tells Six On Your Side, “It’s safe right now. It’s been shored up for the loads to hold it. There has been shoring put up and it will support the concrete”
Parents and children often enter the mall near the cracked garage ceiling. Alyssa Wood says, “I just wonder if it’s damaged? Obviously it’s supported so I’m not too worried.”
The engineer knows how it looks. Squire says, “It is bad but it is shored up properly and it will be repaired properly."
Until it is fixed city inspectors have ordered the top level westside of the parking garage blocked off to traffic.
