The SummerWorks students will clean two locomotives; the Big Boy No. 4023 and Centennial No. 6900.
But before they get out and start working they'll have to be trained. Then the work begins and will wrap up in the afternoon. Participants will be using ladders and scrub brushes to give the locomotives a thorough foam bath. Both Centennial and Big Boy are each more than 10 feet in width, 16 feet high and weigh tons.
Exteriors of the locomotives will be cleaned along with the cab of Big Boy. Locomotives such as Big Boy and Centennial were not designed to sit in parks as they do today. That is why the group will be cleaning them.
The UNO SummerWorks program is managed by UNO’s Service Learning Academy. The program recruits Omaha high school students, ages 15 to 18, to gain work experience, learn new skills, build their resume’s and explore Omaha.
