Elephants and tigers were the focus for students involved in a special program. The Zoo Academy semester projects were presented Friday to parents, peers and Henry Doorly Zoo administration.
The students worked on the project for one year, which decided what materials would be needed to build a new exhibit. One group came up with the idea for heated sidewalks.
“A pachyderm specialist came and spoke with us about the old exhibit and how we can change it to make it better and they said the snow is so exciting for them because it's something new,” said Omaha Central senior Karlee Qualheim.
“But you don't want to have to worry about an elephant slipping on ice or falling in snow because if you get an elephant down it can be hard to get it back up,” said Omaha Burke senior Emily Gray.
The students also said they created an advertising campaign to show off the features of their new exhibits.
