Would-Be Thieves Thwarted by Machine

More Video...

A hoodie-bedecked trio with a capacity for failure tried to steal an ATM from a metro grocery store early Wednesday morning. They were last seen westbound with empty pockets.

Police got word of the attempted theft around 3:30 a.m.

Officers were called to the Bag and Save at 5019 Grover. An intrusion alarm had sounded. Investigators arrived to find broken glass from an exterior window.

Security video shows that a white Econoline or commercial-type van had approached the store. After the glass was shattered, three suspects wearing dark hoodies and dark pants or jeans entered the store and tried to steal the ATM with the help of a chain. The chain didn’t help.

The bankrupt attempt to steal the money machine ended with the suspects driving off in the van, westbound on Grover.

The van had two doors on the back that open on hinges.

While the crooks failed Wednesday morning, detectives believe that this incident is related to several other attempted and successful ATM thefts over the past couple months.

WOWT 6 News has been following this story since the first break-in months ago.

In early January, suspects stole a rental truck, drove it to a DJ's Dugout, and broke the glass to get inside. They took off with the business' ATM machine.

In early February, suspects smashed through a window at a Russell Speeders near 114th and Center. Surveillance video shows three suspects. Two hook a chain from a truck to the ATM machine inside. They drive away, trying to pull the machine out of the building, but the chain breaks.

Then in late February, suspects tried the same tactic at the Pump & Pantry near 370 & I-80. Surveillance video shows them smashing a window, and wrapping their chain around that machine. That time, they pulled it out of the store with their van.

Also in late February, suspects hit a Centris located at 35th and L. 6 News acquired surveillance video from that location as well. The video shows someone jumping out of a white van, and then smashing through that front window. Two more suspects jump out, and they struggle to wrap their chain around the ATM machine inside. They're unable to attach the chain to the machine and the flee from the location.
