Workers Recovering From Stair Collapse

Two men are recovering after a workplace accident that sent them tumbling from a building under construction when a stairway collapsed.

The accident happened Monday at 13th and Jones. Temporary stairs collapsed and Shad Anderson was one of the two men hurt. He fell 30 feet.

His mother, Brenda Johnson, was across town when she got the word that one of the workers who fell was her 23-year-old son.

She said, “You don't know what's going on. You get a phone call saying your son’s in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, you know, the staircase fell in on him. You think the worst. You do.”

Shad survived the 30 foot plunge without any broken bones.

“I don’t know exactly how it happened but some stairs gave way,” he said. “I fell down three flights.”

He landed in a sitting position. A co-worker who fell with him was also not seriously injured.

Shad thinks perhaps someone was watching over him.

“I mean, to fall 30 feet and not get hurt. Yeah right. I think my grandma was there.”

“I know somebody was watching over him,” Brenda said. “Had to. There’s no way somebody wasn't watching over him.”

The accident is still under investigation.
