Construction is underway on a new state-of-the-art Crime Laboratory for the Nebraska State Patrol.
The Patrol joined state and local officials on Thursday for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site of the new facility, located in northwest Lincoln at 3977 Air Park Road.
The Lincoln Airport Authority will pay for the construction of the $9,000,000 facility.
The Nebraska State Patrol will reimburse the Lincoln Airport Authority for the facility through a long term lease.
At 28,000 square feet, once completed the new building, will more than double the size of the current Crime Lab. The new facility is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015.
The Nebraska State Patrol Crime Laboratory which began operations in 1973 has been located at its current facility near 13th & Arapahoe for the past 16 years.
The Crime Lab works an average of 4,000 cases and serves 160 different agencies a year.
