The Council Bluffs Fire Department has identified the woman who was found in her burning home Wednesday afternoon. Fire crews pulled 77-year-old Yon-Sook Kim from the house at 917 Spruce Street. She was rushed to Mercy Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A neighbor was first to see smoke in the area of 9th & Spruce. That person called 911 at 1:17 p.m. A police officer quickly arrived and broke through the door. A fire crew soon followed and removed the woman from the home.
Investigators have not determined the cause of death. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Thursday. Results are expected within two or three days.
A preliminary investigation has found that the fire was an accident, caused by cooking in the kitchen. Fire damage was limited to the hall and kitchen area. There is heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.
No working smoke detector was found in the house.
