A woman who hanged her boyfriend's dog during an argument received a two-year suspended sentence in Des Moines on Friday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Sheena Cornwell had pleaded guilty to one count of animal torture after killing the 10-year-old pit bull mix on April 6th. Cornwell was given two years of probation and will also be required to undergo psychological evaluation and treatment during that time.

Joshua VanDyke, whose dog Lilly was killed, says Cornwell watched the dog die and then calmly told him that the dog "was taken care of." VanDyke went outside and found the dog hanging in the garage from the rafters by her leash.

Cornwell's attorney told the court she has serious mental health issues, but is not a dangerous person.
