Thursday is Winter Weather Awareness Day in Nebraska and Iowa. Are you prepared for the inevitable?

We're really spoiled by how little maintenance it takes to keep our vehicles chugging day after day, but think about the last time you had vehicle trouble. How much of a pain it was and how much it interrupted your day-to-day business.

It’s worth taking the time to make sure these key things are in working order, especially before the cold settles in. Here are six items you can easily check out on without taking your vehicle to a mechanic.:

6. windshield wipers
5. tire pressure
4. tire tread
3. fluid levels
2. functioning lights
1. clear air intake

On average, drivers replace their wipers every two-and-a-half years, though auto mechanics recommend every 6 to 12 months and even if yours are fairly new, now is the time to check to make sure they're in good shape.

"There's nothing worse than coming out on a day where the snow's coming down or even the rain and your wipers aren't functioning,” says Jim Champion at Charlie Graham Body & Service. “You can't see and by that point you don't want to get out and put wipers on at that time, so I'm telling you right now, get in, get your wipers checked and replace them now."

And once we get to those mornings when the ice is building up, be careful with the scraper. In an effort to loosen wipers and clear ice, wipers are often damaged or destroyed.

Also make sure your headlights are clean. "Many new headlights are plastic and they get a film over the top of them," says Champion. "That can actually be buffed off by a body shop and cleaned up and you'd be surprised at how much better your light is coming out the headlights."

Always keep a safety kit in the trunk just in case, including a shovel, blanket, gloves and a hat and extra scrapers. Have a cellphone handy and a charger. Don't forget the WOWT6 news app, a great way to stay ahead of the curve. With features like a customizable hour-by-hour forecast, we'll always let you know when and where to expect the snow to fall. The app is available in both the app store and on Google Play.
