Wine Whine: Rebate Offer Error Confuses Customers

Customers who took advantage of a wine sale at an Omaha grocery store later learned the sale was not what it appeared because they can't collect the advertised rebate. Or so they thought.

Many are getting ready for the holiday season. Stores and restaurants are putting up bright lights and some folks are preparing for guests by stocking up on wine.

It was a flier with promises of discount prices on some pretty good bottles of wine that attracted Les Meyers and many other wine drinkers to the Linden Market Hy-Vee on 132nd and Dodge on Thursday. “It was like a Black Friday sale, there were people carting out cases and cases of wine.”

It was such a good deal that Les purchased a case of wine, then he looked at the fine print on his rebate coupon that read, offer valid only for residents of North Dakota. Les went right to the phone.

“So I called the rebate number and they told me yeah, for North Dakota only. So then I called Tim at Hy-Vee and he said no problem, you will get your $30 rebate."

This went back and forth, so Channel 6 News made a trip to the Linden Market Hy-Vee and the store director there said don’t worry, Hy-Vee has it covered. “The company has assured me the rebate for the wine we sold last night will be 100 percent taken care of,” said store director Jon Johnson. “If anybody has any issues with those, feel free to contact me at the store, I'll make sure they're taken care of, there will be no loss to them."

That’s good news for Les. The rebate will make his wine taste even better. “You know, regardless if I get my rebate or not, it’s gonna get consumed. I'm not taking it back.”

Channel 6 News reached a spokesperson for Constellation Brands, which is involved with the rebate. Jennifer Hodges said the problem came down to a mix-up at the fulfillment warehouse, which prints and distributes the rebate forms.

Someone at the fulfillment warehouse mixed up “ND” for North Dakota with “NE” for Nebraska. After it was realized, those along the chain were informed that the rebate forms from Nebraska would be accepted regardless of what the form read. Customers who called the toll-free number to inquire about the mix-up might have reached some operators who did not see the update that had been given to them.
