Window Film Preventing Burglaries

A break-in can happen at any time and any place. There's a product that could be just as valuable as a security system, and more homeowners and businesses are using it.

Safety & Security Films are protecting people from becoming victims. It's an interwoven polyester that bonds to the inside of the glass. If it's hit with something the glass does break, but doesn't pierce through the seal. Midwest Security Laminations says that the film can also stop a bullet when it is a certain thickness.

"The situations where thieves are breaking through a door through a window of a home or business, this is stopping that from happening because the glass is held in tact and they cannot penetrate that," said Eric Allgood with Midwest Security Laminations.

In fact, MSL was replacing a glass door at a West Omaha business on Wednesday, where burglars tried to smash the window with a sledge hammer. They continued to try but couldn't break through because of the film, so they took off.

"Thieves didn't get in, no mess to clean up, they're open and running for business the next day," Allgood explained.

Kathy O'Neill says she had the film installed with a tint to block the sun from coming in her living room. But she also knows it enhances her security system, further protecting her family.

"Makes me feel really good because I have a lot of grandchildren that come over here, a 6-year-old lives with us, my 6-year-old granddaughter, and I wouldn't want to see anything happen to her so it's just a nice piece of mind," O'Neill described.

MSL says it can cost about $250-300 to secure and install the film on a glass door, but that can go save a lot of money if a burglar were to break the entire door while breaking in, not to mention what could be stolen from inside. They add some companies have started recommending the laminate to clients as part of their security packages.
