A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until midnight Sunday for much of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha. A tornado watch is in effect until 10 p.m. for Nebraska counties south of the metro and a large portion of western Iowa, including Council Bluffs.
Chadron State Park has been closed due to its proximity to a wildfire. The Nebraska Game & Parks Commission said park buildings and cabins were intact Thursday as fire crews were on the scene.
Game & Parks was contacting guests who scheduled Labor Day weekend stays in the cabins at the park.
The park is about nine miles south of Chadron. Chadron is in the northwestern part of the state.
The situation will be re-evaluated Tuesday, the day after Labor Day.
Nearby Fort Robinson State Park is not affected by the wildfire.
