– Nebraska waterfowl hunters should know that wetland conditions throughout much of the state are poor, especially in the areas that will be open to teal hunting.
“Traditionally, the Rainwater Basin area is the heart of teal hunting in Nebraska,” said Mark Vrtiska, waterfowl program manager with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “Our harvest of teal depends on habitat conditions in the basin, for the most part. With these dry conditions, this is going to require hunters to look at other places, such as lakes, reservoirs and ponds, and put more time into scouting.”
The early teal season is Sept. 8-23 in the Low Plains Unit and Sept. 8-16 in the High Plains Unit.
Game and Parks officials next week will consider the possibility of pumping water into some Rainwater Basin wetlands and other wildlife management areas for the regular duck season.
