The uncle of a Shenandoah, Iowa, soldier is reporting that his nephew was killed in action in Afghanistan.

Steve Buttry told Channel 6 News the family was notified Monday that Pfc. Brandon Buttry was killed while manning a watch tower in Afghanistan and that there were "multiple casualties."

Buttry enlisted in the Army after his 19th birthday in January and went to Fort Benning, Georgia, for boot camp. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, in the 123rd Infantry, before deploying to Afghanistan in August. Buttry had just informed his family on Halloween that he had earned his combat infantry badge.

Buttry is survived by his parents, Don and Pam Buttry of Shenandoah, and eight sisters and five brothers, most still living at their rural home south of Shenandoah.

It's unclear when his remains will be returned to the States. The Department of Defense has not yet confirmed Buttry's death.
