Some local law enforcement made special efforts to catch drunk driver's over the St. Patrick's Day weekend.
During six separate special enforcements from Friday through Sunday nights, Omaha Police cited 51 people for DUI. Five of those people were cited for at least 3rd offense DUI.
The Nebraska State Patrol also conducted special enforcement over the weekend. Troopers arrested 23 people statewide for DUI over the holiday weekend.
But for those who decided not to drink and drive, cab rides were a popular option. On Sunday alone, Happy Cab provided more than 2000 trips in Omaha. About 130 of those calls were people taking advantage of the Holiday Free Ride Home program sponsored by Hauptman, O’Brien, Wolf & Lathrop law firm.
Daniel Uriel has been a cab driver for Happy Cab for more than four years and helped get people home safely this weekend. He says he enjoys what he does.
“I like the freedom of being my own boss,” Uriel said. “Setting my own hours. Plus I enjoy helping people. I always have.”
He said this weekend was busier than he expected. And dealing with those who have had too much to drink is part of the job.
“You always run into obnoxious people,” he said. “Inebriated. Had too many drinks. But you just laugh it off and have fun with it. Joke with them.”
