It’s been a long road to recovery but the Chief Information Officer of Wayne State College returned to campus Friday, some three months after being critically injured in the tornado that ripped through town last fall.
John Dunning made his campus comeback to stirring applause from crowds that lined the streets. The accompanying video of the moment was shot by Joe Reklaitis.
John Dunning was hurt when that massive storm pushed through and caught Wayne in its crosshairs. More than a dozen people were injured, buildings were destroyed, damage estimates ran into the millions.
John was hit by flying debris while trying to get to shelter. He was initially placed into a medically-induced coma and later faced several rounds of surgery.
He returned to cheering crowds of supporters and told them, “Thank you, so very much. Thank you for everything you’ve done over the last few months - for all your support, for the cards, for the notes, for the calls… It’s good to be home.”
Dunning has worked at Wayne State since 2011.
