The releases began Tuesday and are expected to create higher-than-normal flows in the North Platte in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

The Casper newspaper reports that it's the earliest release on the North Platte since 1998.

The Bureau of Reclamation says reservoirs on the river are too full to handle all the water they're expected to collect once the snow starts melting.

The snowpack in the upper parts of the North Platte basin is more than 130 percent of average.
