Senior Citizen Alarmed By Alarm Contract

A signalman on a ship in the South Pacific during World War II knows about sounding the alarm. Now the 86 year old veteran has a warning about a sales pitch for a security system.

Harold said a call out of the blue asked him if he wanted a free alarms system Harold said he agreed to let the security system salesman come to his house. But Harold said the salesman and installer didn't arrive until 9pm and took until midnight to complete installation. Since Harold lives alone in the country we won't give his last name. But he said, "I got to thinking, I'm an 86 year old guy and they come in till midnight to put in a damn security deal."

However Harold signed the contract and missed the three day cancellation deadline. He became alarmed when realizing the contract run 60 months at about $45 dollars a month, presumably for monitoring. Harold said, "I can't afford $44.99 a month."

The security company listed on the contract is ISI of Mooresville North Carolina. The Better Business Bureau gives ISI Alarms an F rating.

Fact Finders left messages with the local alarm system installer and the company headquarters. The President of the Omaha area Better Business Bureau also left a message. Fact Finders did receive a response to an email from a company attorney.

Robert Newkirk III sent a statement.

"Despite being 86 years old, it appears that (Harold) agreed to purchase alarm services and, on at least three separate occasions, confirmed this decision with company representatives prior to installation. It also appears that he either requested or agreed to the first available installation date once he made the decision to purchase services, even though he was advised that the installation might be later in the evening.

Approximately three weeks after the installation, however, our record suggests that he had a change of heart. He claimed to have seen a TV report about scams and decided that he wanted to cancel the contract. He also claimed that he was moving into an assisted living facility and would no longer need the alarm system, although it was unclear whether this move had actually occurred.

Nearly a month passed without confirmation of the move. On March 4, 2013, he advised a representative of the company that he was, in fact, not moving to an assisted living facility but wanted out of the contract. On March 5, 2013, the company elected to terminate the contract with him.

Despite the company’s decision, and he expressed satisfaction with it, (Harold) apparently contacted the BBB, the Nebraska Attorney General and you to lodge complaints."

The company representative also provided this response to an F rating by the Better Business Bureau.

"The rating is not what the company wants but they have evaluated every source of consumer complaints and have put procedures in place to reduce the likelihood of future occurrences."
