Omaha-based TD Ameritrade has introduced a new app for Droids, iPhones, and iPads. It allows users to scan products, find out who makes the product, and buy stock in that company.
Let’s say you are enjoying a can of Chef Boy R Dee Ravioli. You like it so much you think to yourself, “I sure would like to buy a piece of that company”. With the TD Ameritrade App, you can scan the can’s UPC symbol to find out that Omaha-based ConAgra is the company that makes the ravioli.
Ideally, the app would give you the stock ticker symbol and with a tap you can purchase ConAgra stock. When we tried it, the app struggled to find the ticker symbols for several companies including ConAgra.
Instead, the app was able to identify ConAgra as the business that makes the ravioli. It was up to the user to research the ticker symbol.
We found success by scanning another product, V8 Juice. The app quickly found that it is made by the Campbell Soup Company with the ticker CPB.
