The Omaha Airport Authority is planning a full scale disaster exercise next month. The drill won’t be possible unless some volunteers step forward.
Organizers say the October 13th drill is necessary to keep first responders ready in the event of a crisis.
The United Way is in charge of finding 90 volunteers, who must be at least 19 years old. Volunteers will be required to arrive at Eppley Airfield by 7:30 a.m. on the 13th.
Some will be painted with simulated injuries. Others will be asked to play the role of a family member of a victim. Volunteers will be asked which role they prefer at the time of registration.
They will also be asked to authorize a waiver of liability and download a Volunteer Actor’s Handbook, which will contain instructions for the drill.
Those who volunteer should wear old, comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and shoes that can be easily removed. In other words, arrive looking like a typical airline passenger.
Jewelry should not be worn. Purses, backpacks and other personal items such as cell phones should be left at home. Volunteers should expect to be needed until 3:30 p.m. Full participation ensures a productive drill.
All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation during the checkout process.
Liquids will be provided for all participants. Breakfast and lunch will also be served. Restrooms will be available.
